Ajinkya Dhariya: Redefining Menstrual Hygiene Management for a Sustainable Future

In 2018, Ajinkya Dhariya visited a landfill near Pune, India, and witnessed a shocking scene that would change the course of his life. Ragpickers were scavenging used sanitary napkins and diapers with their bare hands, exposing themselves to severe health risks. This grim reality spurred Dhariya into action, leading him to establish Padcare Labs, a pioneering initiative aimed at revolutionizing menstrual hygiene management while promoting sustainability. The issue at hand is monumental. In a country with 121 million menstruating females, India generates a staggering 1,200 crore sanitary napkin waste annually. An alarming 98 percent of this waste ends up in landfills because there is no efficient disposal system or supply chain in place. Confronted with this environmental crisis, Dhariya resolved to address the entire value chain, from collection to processing, to tackle the problem comprehensively.
Padcare Labs adopted an innovative approach to menstrual hygiene management, recognizing that users primarily seek a convenient and hygienic method for disposing of sanitary napkins. To meet this need, they introduced Padcare bins that allow sanitary napkins to be stored for up to 30 days without odors or bacterial growth. Once filled, these bins are collected from various locations and transported to a material recovery facility (MRF) operated by Padcare Labs. At the MRF, Padcare employs its patented technology, capable of recovering nearly 99 percent of the materials within sanitary napkins in just 20 minutes and at a low cost. This process efficiently separates the materials into pulp and plastic. The pulp can find applications across multiple industries, including paper and packaging, while the plastic is transformed into granules and used to manufacture Padcare bins. This comprehensive “menstrual hygiene management” solution is offered as a service to clients, creating a sustainable ecosystem.
Revenue generation for Padcare Labs primarily relies on a per-pick-up and per-bin charge, which accounts for 80 percent of their income. The remaining 20 percent comes from the output waste, comprising pulp and plastic, as well as the sale of products made from these recycled materials. With a clientele that includes prestigious names like Mahindra, P&G, Goldman Sachs, and the Hero Group, the company has achieved a turnover of ₹2.2 crore. Padcare Labs boasts significant funding, exceeding $0.5 billion, from organizations such as BIRAC, Niti Aayog, Infosys Foundation, Tata Trust, and others. Looking ahead, Ajinkya Dhariya has ambitious plans for Padcare Labs. Geographical expansion, both within India and internationally, is on the horizon. The company also aims to collaborate closely with residential communities to enhance its impact. Furthermore, Padcare Labs is exploring the potential of applying its technology to manage other materials, including diapers, tetra packs, and textile waste.
In a world increasingly focused on sustainability and responsible waste management, Ajinkya Dhariya and Padcare Labs stand as a shining example of innovation and entrepreneurship driven by a commitment to a healthier planet and a brighter future for all. Their tireless efforts to redefine menstrual hygiene management underscore the transformative power of innovation in addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
