Sonia Lather – The Pride Of India
Sonia Lather is a one time World championship silver medalist and two times Asian championship silver medalist.
Born in a small village of Haryana Jind- Julana, a place where sex ratio and opportunities for girls is extremely low, a place where girls are discriminated and not allowed to pursue sports or studies. She faced social bullying for wanting to become a boxer as it was a taboo for girls to indulge in any contact sports.
During her journey, she faced some family issues as well. Her two brothers were arrested in a murder case and her father was injured in 2011 since then she has been taking care of him
Earlier she played Kabbadi and Wrestling at the age of 18 she started boxing. She won the silver medal at 2012 Asian Women’s Amateur Boxing Championships in 54 kg category. Later in that year, she competed at the 2012 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship where she lost the first round by 9-18 against Elena Walendzik of Germany.
At the 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship she entered the quarterfinals. She also entered the quarterfinals of 2017 Asian Women’s Amateur Boxing Championships. She represented Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) at 2018 Senior National Boxing Championships in Featherweight division ( 54-57 kg).
Despite all her hardships and facing all social issues, Sonia Lather got immense success in the field of boxing. She was honoured by the Arjuna award in 2019. She gets inspiration from Indian Olympic boxer Mary Kom and Olympic medal holder Vijender Singh.
Currently, during locked, she is training hard and has been working on a secret plan to beat younger competitors in our country before getting Into Tokyo Olympics. Fitness has always been her first priority. And she is well disciplined and punctual for her goals. She is a true example of sheer will power and courage
