Nkechi Iregbulem is building her reputation in venture capital by focusing on what most investors overlook—early, pre-consensus opportunities. As a principal at Hico Ventures, she invests in pre-seed and seed-stage startups across AI and digital assets, targeting ideas before they become mainstream.

Her journey into venture capital includes experience at MVP Ventures, where she backed companies like Saronic in defense tech and AI startup Atero, which was later acquired by Crusoe in 2025. These early bets reflect her ability to identify emerging technologies with real-world applications.

At Hico Ventures, Iregbulem continues this approach. One of her standout investments is Neros, a company she backed at the pre-seed stage when it was still a small FPV drone manufacturer. Since then, the startup has scaled significantly, securing major contracts with the US Department of Defense—a strong validation of her early conviction.

Her investment philosophy centres on industries that are often complex, capital-intensive and overlooked in early-stage venture capital—such as defense, energy, aerospace and robotics. She believes the biggest opportunities lie in identifying these sectors before the broader market pays attention.

For Iregbulem, success comes from being early and being right—not following trends, but anticipating them.

Her approach reflects a broader shift in venture capital, where the edge increasingly lies in seeing what others haven’t yet recognised.

Because by the time everyone agrees on an opportunity, it’s often already too late to capture its full potential.
