Amanda Huang represents a growing class of venture capitalists who come from a builder background, bringing firsthand product and engineering experience into investing. Before joining Bain Capital Ventures, she worked in engineering and product roles at Adobe—experience that now shapes her focus on developer tools and AI infrastructure.

Her investment style is grounded in understanding how products are actually used, not just how they perform on paper. This approach was evident in her early conviction in Black Forest Labs, a German startup behind the image-generation tool Flux.

While many in the market focused on raw AI benchmarks, Huang identified a different signal—what creative teams truly value. She believed that users cared more about control, precision and reliability than just performance metrics. Flux’s ability to offer tunability and flexibility made it stand out in an increasingly crowded AI space.

That thesis proved right. Black Forest Labs went on to raise a $300 million Series B at a $3.25 billion valuation, reinforcing the importance of product-centric thinking in AI investing.

Beyond deal-making, Huang is also building community in an unconventional way. She launched Cafe Compute, a late-night pop-up gathering co-hosted with AI company Cerebras, where founders, developers and researchers come together to collaborate, exchange ideas and work side by side.

This initiative reflects her belief that innovation often happens in informal, collaborative environments, not just boardrooms.

Huang’s approach highlights a broader evolution in venture capital—where understanding users, building communities and thinking like a product creator can be just as valuable as financial insight.

Because in the world of AI, the winners aren’t just the most powerful tools—but the ones people actually want to use.
