Whenever a celebrity committed suicide, then people were so upset that they embraced death themselves. This concept, named Warther Effect, was seen after the death of famous actress Marilyn Monroe.

On 4 August 1962, actress and Hollywood superstar Marilyn Monroe, one of the most beautiful actresses in the world, had said goodbye to this world. She was found dead in her room. Battling alcohol and drugs, Munro had consumed several sleeping pills. Some people described his death as suicide while many people called it an accident.

However, in the coming months, more than 300 people committed suicide in America and many people also made unsuccessful attempts to commit suicide. A few years later, the same thing happened in America after the suicide of famous rockstar and singer of Nirvana band Kurt Cobain. Hundreds of people committed suicide. Whenever a celebrity committed suicide, then people were so upset that they embraced death themselves.

In 1974, the sociologist David Phillips named this concept the Worth effect. Phillips did research between 1947 and 1968 and found that whenever the New York Times published a suicide report of a popular figure, it saw a 12 percent increase in suicide incidents within the next month. Significantly, Phillips took the name of the Werther effect from a novel. The novel was titled The Sorrows of Young Werther.

Released in the year 1774, this novel was written by a German writer. In this novel, a man named Werther shoots himself for his love and commits suicide. After the release of this novel, more than 40 young people had committed suicide in the manner of Werther. Because of this the novel was also banned in countries like Italy and Denmark. Talking about the recent times, in the year 2017, Canada tried to ban Suicide-based Netflix show ’13 regions why’ because the Canadian government felt that this webseries could have a similar effect on people.
