In an era when the world is increasingly turning its focus towards sustainability and eco-conscious living, Tejas Sidnal, the visionary founder of CarbonCraft Design, is on a mission to transform the way we build our homes. His innovative approach not only offers a sustainable solution but also aims to create carbon-negative living spaces, setting a new standard for clean and healthy living. As an architect and biomimetic designer, Tejas Sidnal is well-versed in the art of combining nature-inspired design with sustainable practices. His brainchild, CarbonCraft Design, introduces a groundbreaking product known as the CarbonCraft Tile. This tile is the first of its kind, crafted from upcycled carbon derived from various waste carbon streams, including tire pyrolysis, biomass waste, and particulate matter capturing partners.

Sidnal emphasizes the scale of the issue, stating, “Each year, 100 million waste tires are recycled in India, and there are over 600 registered pyrolysis plants. An estimated 1.5 lakh tonnes of this carbon waste is produced here.” Until now, this material had no sustainable repurposing alternative and was often used as cheap fuel in cement and brick kilns, or worse, ended up in landfills, polluting soil, water bodies, and the air. CarbonCraft Tile production takes place in a factory in Morbi, Gujarat, where the waste carbon is ingeniously combined with marble chips, marble powder, cement, and proprietary binders. The result is a remarkable tile available in over 16 pattern designs, more than 40 plate designs, and various sizes. What makes the CarbonCraft Tile even more extraordinary is its environmentally friendly footprint: it consumes just one-fifth of the energy required for the production of a conventional tile, saves 15 minutes of diesel car pollution, and incorporates 70 percent upcycled material.

Tejas Sidnal’s efforts and CarbonCraft Design’s groundbreaking innovation have not gone unnoticed. The venture received the Emergent Venture grant from the Mercatus Centre, backed by the Thiel Foundation. Furthermore, it achieved global recognition by emerging as the third-place winner from a pool of over 3,000 participants at the ClimateLaunchpad, the world’s most extensive clean tech competition. Despite being a bootstrapped venture, CarbonCraft Design has set its sights on raising funds to further its mission. Tejas Sidnal’s vision goes beyond just tiles; he envisions applying the same technology to produce bricks, building materials, ink, and more. The ultimate goal is to deploy one million square feet of this sustainable solution to have a significant social and environmental impact.

Tejas Sidnal and CarbonCraft Design are demonstrating that sustainability and innovative design can go hand in hand, offering not only eco-friendly solutions but also a vision for a better, cleaner, and more sustainable future.
