As a part of the Emirates Fine Arts Society and one of the ‘Five’—which makes it a group of pioneers among Emirati artists – Kazem has given much to this very promising art scene from UAE.
Mohammed Kazem’s work is typified by his ability to express abstract ideas into forms that have physical existence. He was very innovative in 1990, as he created visual representations of sound. Using scissors to scratch and gouge paper, he created a series of works that conveyed the intangible nature of sound in a physical form. It marked the beginning of his conceptual art journey, challenging the viewer to think beyond what is visible and delve deeper into meaning. Kazem’s portfolio includes photography, videography, and installations, often incorporating advanced technology to create immersive experiences. His works invite audiences to question their perceptions, encouraging an emotional and intellectual engagement with the art.
Mohammed Kazem is widely recognized as one of the ‘Five,’ an informal group of Emirati artists that played a pivotal role in introducing interdisciplinary and conceptual art practices to the region. Kazem worked with the big names such as Hassan Sharif and Abdullah Al Saadi, and through his efforts to establish a unique identity of art for the UAE by fusing global influences with local culture, this would be the starting point of a contemporary art movement in the UAE. Besides these contributions, Kazem helped expand the arts community as an active member of the Emirates Fine Arts Society, established to develop and support talent in the field and provide a platform for promoting arts in the region.
What makes Kazem different is his embracing of new technologies in art. He has always tried to expand his medium, from integrating video installations to using data mapping and GPS coordinates in his pieces. This innovative approach reflects his commitment to exploring how technology can enhance storytelling and representation in art.
Not least in this respect is his Directions series, where Kazem plotted personal movement across landscapes via GPS coordinates, creating geography and personal narrative in hybrid. Such works demonstrate an ability to bridge the actual and conceptual worlds, delivering the viewer a multi-dimensional understanding of his work.
Academic achievements further set out his commitment to practice. He graduated with a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. This experience enriched his global perspective and artistic vocabulary. His education allowed him to refine his conceptual approach and blend international art trends with his unique vision. His works have been showcased in prestigious galleries and exhibitions worldwide, solidifying his reputation as a global artist. From Venice to New York, Kazem’s works strike a chord in the hearts of viewers across cultures, presenting universal themes through a very personal lens.
