The story of Ramesh Shukla is as fascinating as the photographs he captures. Arriving in Dubai more than 40 years ago with nothing but a Rolleicord camera and seven rolls of film, he transformed his passion for photography into a legacy that immortalizes the UAE’s historic journey. Known as the man behind the “Spirit of the Union” image, Shukla has documented the rise of the UAE, earning a place as one of the country’s most celebrated photographers. His work is not just art but a visual history of a nation’s transformation.

Born in India, Shukla received his Rolleicord camera as a birthday gift when he turned 14. This single gift ignited his passion for photography. Shukla started as a photographer for the Times of India and captured the culture and essence of life. He felt that his ambition lay outside the borders of India and, in the late 1960s, made his way to Dubai. With his camera in hand and very limited resources, Shukla clicked pictures of everything he could, from markets with thousands of people and deserts with nothing but sands, to dignitaries and royal families. This fast-emerging city inspired him with endless vistas, and his work became quickly popular.

In 1971, Ramesh Shukla also wrote his name in the annals of UAE history by capturing the signing of the accord that united the emirates into the United Arab Emirates. The spirit of the union logo later based its picture on the photograph taken by Ramesh Shukla.

It was serendipitous—Shukla had no official invitation but could document one of the most significant events in Middle Eastern history. The photograph now stands as a symbol of unity and pride, prominent during UAE National Day celebrations and on many platforms.

With Ramesh Gallery Four Seasons, Shukla transformed his passion into a thriving business. He is one of the suppliers of fine art, photographs, and lighting accessories to the hospitality industry; his work adorns luxury hotels, museums, and cultural institutions. His collection is through the decades, recording UAE’s transformation from being an ordinary desert landscape to become one of the biggest world economies. Shukla’s photographs are also testimony to day-to-day Emirati life, safeguarding culture for the future.

Over the years, Shukla has published many books, each providing a view of the journey of the UAE through his eyes. They not only depict the progress of the country but also give a very personal narrative of the bond he had with the land and its people.

His books bridge the past to the present, reminding people of the resilience and vision that built the UAE. They also celebrate unique culture, traditions, and leadership that have shaped the nation.

Ramesh Shukla has gained recognition for his contributions in photography and history. His works have been exhibited all over the world, hailed as both artistic and historical works. Most importantly, though, his photographs speak to people, narrate stories that words often can’t. Being a pathfinder in the documentation of the early days of the UAE, Shukla has inspired numerous photographers to use their art as a means of storytelling. From being a teenage photographer in India to a celebrated figure in Dubai, his journey is the power of perseverance and passion.

Though famous, Shukla is deeply connected to the core of his work – storytelling through visuals. He continues to inspire new generations and share his experiences with them to pursue their dreams. Photography is a profession and a way for Shukla to connect with people and moments in such a manner that no one ever forgets.
