Lockdown Food trends in India
On March 25, 2020, PM Narendra Modi declared a 25 days lockdown due to Covid-19 and it got extended upto September 18 making it a total of 177 days.
During this whole lockdown thing, there was a shocking growth in people experimenting with cooking because all the restaurants and cafes were closed. Among other interests and passion of everyone, cooking was pretty common for all and took first place.
According to a report, most searched food items included a mix of baking and street foods.
This made a sudden rise in cooking videos and tutorials and chefs like Sanjeev Kapoor, Ranveer Brar, Kabita’s Kitchen who uploaded these videos were very much overwhelmed by this trend. As per they say that it has always been their utmost pleasure to help people in discovering their passion for cooking.
What’s amusing is that this sudden rise in search has mainly been concentrated in metro cities like Delhi, Banglore, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and others as well.
Start of the lockdown period resulted in a huge amount of selling of raw products for cooking like maida, rava, cheese and other spices as well.
Some of the most trendy food items during the lockdown were:
Dalgona coffee
Recipe of dalgona coffee went so viral in India as it saw a 5000 percent spike on its tutorial videos. Even Bollywood celebrities were into this trend and everyone posted snaps of their own made Dalgona Coffee.
Baking
It doesn’t matter if there was an oven or not in someone’s home. People used pressure cookers to bake things like oreo cake which was made almost in everyone’s home. Those having birthdays during this lockdown period were seen cutting homemade oreo cakes decorated with chocolate syrup and other colourful candies. Another thing people tried in baking was Banana Bread. It saw many varieties such as banana pies and banana muffins.
Homemade Pizzas
Food joints like Dominos and PizzaHut made people and mostly kids loved pizzas so much that in lockdown having no orders, home made pizzas not just made it fun but also involved kids trying their hands in cooking. Videos from basics including how to make dough are available online and different flavours and toppings.
Street Food
With proper lockdown, street stalls were properly closed, foods like Chicken Momos, Panipuri and different types of chats were being prepared in every house as snack items. Chicken momos recipe shows a spike of 4350 percent in its views and searches on different online platforms.
This pandemic has made everyone self-reliant and made many working men and women grow love towards cooking. Now nobody thinks of any stigma of stepping into the kitchen.
