  • The emergency rescue will help to create the right air pressure

  • This shaft is 15 storeys deep, has a diameter of 10.3 meters

Someone should learn from our engineers the skill to turn trouble into a good situation. When the entire country was closed in houses due to lockdown, the engineers of Kolkata Metro took advantage of this and built the country’s deepest air shaft, i.e. ventilation shaft. The depth of this shaft is 43.5 meters.

Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation (KMRC) considered lockdown as the best opportunity to build this deep shaft. Depth of 43.5 meters means a 15-story building. Even before this, KMRC gave a significant gift to the country.

KMRC and Afcons together have given the nation the deepest Howrah railway station. Together these two have made the Underwater Twin Rail Transport Tunnel for the country.

The workers had gone to their respective homes due to the lockdown. Work was off, But the speed of work in unlocking was fast. This shaft is built between the metro from Saltlake Sector 5 to Saltlake Stadium. The metro running here will reach Sealdah, Esplanade, Mahakaran, Howrah Station and then Howrah Maidan.

Creating such a deep air shaft was a big challenge in itself. The reason was that there were very old and dilapidated buildings around it. Because of this, KMRC engineers had to face a lot of challenges.

This project is also connected to the Hooghly River. Therefore, in preparing it, the geographical conditions around the shaft were tested. The diameter of this shaft is 10.3 meters. It was built to pass air between the two metro stations tunnel.

This shaft has been prepared between the two metro tunnels. The depth of the shaft had to be matched with the depth of the metro tunnel, which is present at a depth of 40 meters from the river surface. Due to this shaft, ventilation and emergency will help in evacuating the passengers.
