Jyotirmayee Dash is the founder of TeraLumen Solutions which combines terahertz technology and powerful machine learning algorithms to address complex real-world challenges. It has created a gadget that can accurately and non-invasively detect cancer margins during surgery.

Jyotirmayee earned her bachelor’s degree in engineering from Odisha and her master’s degree from the College of Engineering in Guindy, Chennai, before joining the CSIR to pursue her doctoral studies. She started as an Assistant Professor at SRM University in Chennai after finishing her Ph.D., which allowed her to enhance her profile while also planning for her business adventure. She put the time to good use by putting money aside, creating a sound business plan, and preparing presentations. Jyotirmayee Dash was instrumental in the establishment of India’s first fully dedicated Terahertz laboratory while pursuing her doctoral studies in Terahertz technologies.
TeraLumen Solutions Pvt. Ltd. is a startup firm created in 2019 with the goal of developing revolutionary medical devices for breast cancer margin detection using Multispectral Technology (Terahertz and Mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopic techniques). TeraLumen intends to provide a cost-effective, quick, and precise approach for distinguishing between benign and malignant tissues during Breast Conservation Surgery (BCS). Dedicated cancer care hospitals, including regional and national facilities, multi-specialty cancer clinics, and cancer research institutes are among Teralumen’s target audiences.

Oncologists can see the margin in real-time with the device, which cuts surgery time in half. As a result, the doctors will be able to see a larger number of patients. According to Jyotirmayee, the TeraLumen technology will assist oncosurgeons in reducing around 1.2 lakh second procedures every year, benefiting many patients. She also emphasizes the device’s importance in nondestructive testing (NDT) applications, which will aid in the prevention of failures that could jeopardize safety, dependability, and the environment.
