Brian Zhan Is Bringing “Nerdy Investing” to the AI Frontier
Brian Zhan represents a new breed of venture capitalist—one who combines deep technical expertise with early-stage conviction. After spending two years as a principal at CRV, he joined the newly formed Striker Venture Partners in 2025 to focus on bold bets in the next generation of AI startups.
Zhan’s background sets the tone for his investment style. A computer science graduate from Northwestern University, he began his career as a software engineer at Facebook. That hands-on technical experience now informs what he calls “nerdy investing”—an approach grounded in understanding the underlying technology, not just the market narrative.
He has already been involved in early investments in companies like Skild AI, Dyna Robotics, Periodic Labs, and Reflection AI, all operating at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence and robotics.
What makes Zhan stand out is his ability to connect with founders on a technical level. In an industry where many investors come from purely financial backgrounds, his experience allows him to speak the same language as builders—earning trust and credibility early.
As Reflection AI CEO and cofounder Misha Laskin noted, Zhan’s rare combination of technical depth, strong network and insight into frontier technologies makes him a valuable partner for startups navigating complex challenges.
His approach reflects a broader shift in venture capital, where technical fluency is becoming a key differentiator, especially in AI.
Because in a world shaped by increasingly complex technologies, the investors who understand the details are often the ones who spot the biggest opportunities.
